Video Games
On Thursday, students from all clusters gathered at the Recreational Lounge to play video games. Located near the dining hall, the Rec Lounge hosts weekly gaming sessions. Snacks were provided, and games were broadcast from the projector for multiple students and RAs to play. This time, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was put on the projector. Students tried to beat each other by scoring the most eliminations while minimizing deaths. While Super Smash Bros. was the main game played, others played their own games. Hearthstone, Minecraft, and League of Legends were all played. I thought that it was interesting that while everyone might be playing different games (or could have chosen to game in their dorms), there was a social element to the activity. People battled each other in Smash Bros. and readily included others who wanted to join in. Discussion about different tactics, video game lore, and updates were commonly heard. The environment provided a positive place to game with friends as well as eat some snacks!

Talent Show
There was a long line in front of the multipurpose room waiting for the talent show to begin. At last, the students were led in and they started finding their seats. When the talent show began, everyone was very excited about what was going to happen. During the talent show, there was singing, dancing, and talk shows from very talented individuals within this summer program. One example was when a student, Ellen Wang, hosted her talk show in front of the audience. The talk show was mainly about how to speak to a love interest, which included many pick-up lines. Needless to say, everyone was entertained and it was one of the most fun activities during the talent show. Another event during the show was Eugenie Cha and an RA, Allen, playing the game Tetris. The game ended up being very intense and interesting as the players were constantly battling each other. Nevertheless, it was a fun experience for everybody and the players definitely enjoyed it.
At last, the talent show ended and it was time for everyone to return to their dorms. The sky was dark and everyone was still hyped about what happened during the show. The people who performed in the show were congratulated for their excellent performance the very next day, making the talent show definitely a night to remember. By: Ayala Wang |
Carnival
It was finally the day of the COSMOS Carnival! The anticipation of this event was building up among the students right from Week 1. The event took a lot of planning from the RAs and the help of the Student Council to set up. The Student Council started working behind the scenes an hour and half before the carnival started. We helped set up tables and stations, as well as decorate the area with streamers.
One of the main attractions of a carnival is cotton candy, and so the COSMOS staff made sure that a cotton candy machine was available for us to use. It was a struggle getting it to work at first as the machine shook the whole table when it turned on, but we eventually got it to work. Soon, all the students started lining up, excited to get food and play the fun games. My friend and I were in charge of the popcorn stand. The popcorn was very popular and was gone within 5 minutes! Students then lined up for the cotton candy and the line stretched very far. After distributing the popcorn, we moved to the cotton candy station. The cotton candy was in high demand, so we had to work fast. I had never worked with a cotton candy machine before, and I didn’t expect it to be so loud. We even had to wear earplugs! The RA's were handling the machine and yelling “pack!”, “cone!” “Pack” referred to serving the cotton candy in a cup, and “cone” referred to giving it in the cone. Soon, we got into a rhythm, constantly running from the machine to the students. Despite all the cotton candy we served, the line did not seem to be getting shorter. We continued working, and passing out the cotton candy. Eventually, all the students got cotton candy, and we closed the machine. I then explored the other events. The ice cream station was another popular choice. There was a balloon animal station and students were putting in unique requests. Many asked for a balloon sword and headband. Balloon dogs and cat ears were also a popular choice. The Social Science Lawn was the scene for many intense games, including cup stacking, cup pong, and a piñata! At the end of the night, there was a raffle. Students got tickets for winning games and helping set up. We were all hyped to see the winners. The prizes ranged from reversible octopi to COSMOS merch! The carnival was a fun and unique experience, and definitely one of the favorites of many COSMOS students! By: Sneha Narayan |
Kahoot Night
This week’s mandatory, “Trivia Night”, started off with a long, enjoyable walk all the way to the discovery lecture room. We split into three groups of sizes of two, three, and seven. Each group was headed in a different direction. We all had tons of fun during the Kahoot night because everyone was talking with their friends and chatting about recent and upcoming events. There were around 100 people playing in the group with seven clusters, and some people were just playing their own games. The usernames were very original and amusing. There were five fun categories that we played, which were Disney, geography, iconic series, riddles, and video games. The trivia questions were creative and unexpected, so a lot of people got stuck on some of them. The iconic series included Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, and Star Wars, which are definitely renowned considering the cheers of the crowd. There was a loud uproar everytime the leaderboards were shown because everyone was cheering for one of the top 5. Everyone had lots of fun and was enthusiastic about spending their friday night enjoying their time with their peers.
